Description

Inspired by the original, I wanted to make a tensegrity table like it with closed-loop chain. I wanted to design a chain that can be printed in place. After several iterations I found a way to print round-bodied chain links with minimal support and a nice clean look to them. I modified the attachment method to use a printed screw as the way to adjust the tension. I like the streamlined look of the attachment points. Thank you @BigScorch for the inspiration.

The basic dimensions are unchanged. My design changes the chain style and the attachment methods at the frame.

For best results, ensure that you are using a dry, high-quality filament and that you have taken appropriate steps to maintain good adhesion to the build plate. Failure to do so could result in a failed print. Build plate adhesion can be improved by washing the plate with soap and water, or washing the plate with alcohol, or by using a glue stick or a liquid glue on the build plate. Do not over-tighten the screws.

4 stars for now due to having to re-print the chains and there being a failure twice. Other than that it ended up coming together nicely. Used a screw driver to pop out the support in the screw hole which worked nicely. Popped right out. Yes, bed plate was freshly washed, and silk filament was dried for over 12 hours. I increased and added raft layers and that seemed to help. Plan on printing another in the coming days with non-silk, will update review if that goes off without a hitch.

Bambu silk filament is not good for chain. I gave up trying to get that to work. the layer adhesion makes small parts break during printing and it comes off the bed. PLA works great for chain.

love it! had a couple of issues with the screws spaghettifying (did not use glue- switched to a smooth plate and it worked better) I changed the table supports to tree as I prefer them. came out fine. I also moved the links together (far enough that the supports had space) and then grouped them together so they would print together for added brim support. did the yellow in petg- mostly because that’s the favourite colour of the kid whose bday it was for. boosted.

Strength Issue:screws do stay connected at all and chain joints may be weaker than screws. difficult to assemble with issue in strength of pieces

Other Issues:after 2 prints of the chains, I had to accept combined functional peicws because both had spaghetti and layer shift

It appears you are having issues related to adhesion and printer issues, not necessarily a design issue. I had bad luck with silk filament for the chain and small parts, but it works great with a good dry filament. The failures you describe in the chain print are bed adhesion issues. There are several ways to address that. Bed cleaning, glue stick, or 3D printing glue. the glue that Bambu sells works fantastic.

no, most of the stuff adhered and the printer printed a slice of a file I made for the model perfectly fine. the bigger issue to me is the strength issue

I’m sorry you are having a strength issue. I have assembled about 20 of those without an issue, so we are doing something different. The screw joint is fragile and must be treated delicately. I have a video that shows how to assemble that joint. I can send it to you if you like.

Happy with the final result. I realize this is a remix, but the screws are just sort of fragile and I broke one screwing it in which was a PITA to get out. I think there is probably a less fragile mechanism that could be devised for tightning the chains than what this uses. Also the chains failed unless I printed them at 50%. I did the whole thing in PETG so that it won't loosen over time.

Printed well in three different colors, but the chains don't seem to want to fit. I have the print set aside until I can find time to make the holes slightly larger. It may be my fault, due to the fact that I printed at 75 percent scale. Thanks for sharing the model.
