Settings with ironing worked down to perfection to create stunningly smooth surfaces and overall prints that almost look like they were cast from PLA instead of printed. There are two print profiles: Textured and Smooth. Textured uses the adhesion of a textured plate to create a standard first layer. Since the smooth plate is notoriously horrible with bed adhesion if not maintained properly, I made a first layer with the Hilbert Curve pattern to minimize travel moves, since there's a chance of bed adhesion loss every time the nozzle has to stop and re-extrude in a different place. This method also makes the nozzle lines on the smooth plate completely invisible. Both profiles work with both plates if the build plate is maintained/glued properly, but they are optimized for quality and minimal print time for their respective plates.

 

It's only 20-30 minutes out of your day and 2 grams of filament off your spool, so give it a try!

 

9/23/24: Apparently, most of you are not having the smooth plate bed adhesion issues that I did when I created my presets, so I changed the print profile names accordingly to emphasize the former “textured plate” profile, which is now universal. The smooth plate profile is still up, but it is for those of you who do not use alcohol or glue to maintain your build plates and need a way to fix your bed adhesion.

Seems like some people are not understanding the point of this. the point is not to print it although you could, the point is to download it and look at it in bambu studio to see what the ironing settings are and then use those ironing settings on any of your own prints that you want to have a really smooth top surface, assuming they have flat top surfaces.

Excellent settings. Although it slightly messed up the print (most likely my fault). Where it worked, it's truly as smooth as glass. The left side shows your settings and the right side shows the default Bambu Studio settings. Fantastic job, Bravo!!!

I think that may have something to do with either residual debris on the nozzle or improper bed leveling. However, seeing the default settings, I would increase the layer height and the ironing flow. I’m really sorry; I’ve never seen that issue before.

finished printing my print using these setting, the black one is perfect and blue one is rough. printed them at the same time and they took 5 hrs compared to the 1 hour it usually takes. any idea why blue would’ve stuffed up?

I assume it's because blue is not calibrated to its needs. Either flow dynamics, acceleration, or something else is causing the surface to under- or over-extrude due to a different diameter/flow rate/density/expansion/other issue. Are they the same brand?

Overall, it works quite well, but often I encounter these minor flaws (see photo). Do you know which settings to adjust, as I would like to use this technique on larger pieces in the future?

That problem is actually quite unavoidable. My best bet would be to increase the layer height, add a bit of ironing (see my other model), and increase the line width to make a smoother top surface. Let me know how it goes.

There is some improvement, but I don’t know why the two enclosed sections are not smoothed, even though the nozzle passes over them. I increased the smoothing width and flow rate.

0.2mm nozzle, you can see the fiber from the cloth i cleaned it with more than any lines. this is fantastic.

Phenomenal! The blue, with a 0.6mm nozzle, didn't work as well. Probably needs the tuning to be appropriate for 0.6mm. But look at the white! You can't even tell it's printed! Now i'm excited to use this profile in my models.

That miscalculation may be because of the flow rates of the 0.6, plus its larger surface area. It was not designed for such a nozzle. However, if and when I buy more nozzles, I will post the presets for each of them.

Yeah, i didn’t mean it as a complaint - just a comment on my testing. I’m assuming the results you got took MANY tries with different variations and i was pretty sure 0.6mm wasn’t going to work. I figured it would be nice to post it just so others knew. The 0.4mm is where it’s at, and it’s amazing!

No, I believe the problem is size. I do believe you need to recalibrate your flow or at least Z-factor, but make the platform as smooth as it is in the original file and I think it'll turn out better than a handheld model.
