Description

Description

This simple-looking tile has the special property of being able to tile infinitely without ever repeating its pattern!

This puzzle will drive you crazy!

  • Try and tile as large an area as possible - 2 tiles easy, 5 tiles not so hard, 20+ tiles difficult!
  • See how long you can create a non-crossing ‘snake’ on the tiles
  • Tiles can be flipped over (same on both sides)
  • Unique interlocking design keeps the tiles in place while you struggle to place the next tile
  • Print as few or many as you like - all the tiles are the same - more tiles → harder to solve
  • If you get stuck there are plenty of online examples of large tilings that you can use as a guide
  • Remember there is not one solution!

Background

The Einstein Hat tile for aperiodic tiling of the plane. Discovered in 2022 by David Smith the Einstein Hat tile will tile the infinite plane aperiodically. See Wikipedia article here.

This design of the tile is fully interlocking. By careful placement of the interlocking sections, all orientations and combinations of tiles, including flipped tiles, can be arranged.
