“Bearly” 3D puzzles!
I'm excited to share my puzzle design that originally started its life as a woodworking idea but transitioned beautifully (at least I think so) into a 3D printed model. I call these barely 3D because, as you can see, they are made of three stacked layers, providing an interesting perception of depth while still remaining less than a centimeter thick.
Each layer is cut into unique shapes that roughly follow the general anatomy of a bear, one of my favorite animals, which provides fun, creative expression through color variations. When not being used, the bear can be fit securely into its grass stand for display as well. The pieces are assembled with pins and holes that are randomly placed, but ensure a secure fit once the puzzle is complete.
During the first couple assemblies, the pins will fit tightly into the holes, so take caution when removing the individual pieces to avoid bending or breaking them. For this reason I included a middle layer design that incorporates a wedge that can be used to safely remove the individual segments. You can see in the image included where the wedge fits into the middle layer, hidden from sight until needed. If this isn't necessary, I've also included a middle plate that is still segmented, and a solid version as well.
I've really enjoyed designing these and seeing what different color variations I can come up with, and my kids have had fun taking them apart and putting them back together. I plan to create more puzzles in a similar style soon, so if there are any ideas or suggestions, I welcome any and all feedback!
Thank you for taking a look and I hope you enjoy these as much as I have!
