Description

Summary

This is a chess set designed to be easily printed without any supports with a board roughly 220x220mm in order to fit most buildplates.

Content

  • Gameboard
  • Storage box
  • Complete set of pieces:
    • King
    • Queen
    • Knight
    • Bishop
    • Rook
    • Pawn

In total 128 5x1mm magnets* need to be bought in order to fill all magnet holes

  • 64 pcs for the board
  • 32 pcs for the pieces
  • 32 pcs for the box

Pieces

The pieces are designed to be a modern interpretation of the classic ones, but still keeping their most recognized features. And also trying to utilize the unique possibilities that 3D-printing provides compared to the regular injection molded products we are used to see.

Board and box

The box is fitted with one compartment for each piece, the smaller for pawns and the larger for the others. To cover these is a rail system built into the box for the gameboard to be able to slide into with the checkered side up and thereby seal the box up.

The board need to be printed in black with the raised sections in white which minimized the material swaps needed. I was able to print with only one swap.

Magnets

The pieces, the board and the box are designed with holes/slots for 5x1mm magnets to be dry fitted*. These allows for a satisfying and more stable playing experience and keeps the pieces neatly organized in the box. Depending on your machine the holes may be a little small or big, but then you could either use a dot of glue, gently drill out the holes with a flat headed drill or edit the file in a program like Microsofts 3D Builder.

The holes in the pieces and box are made to be able get the magnets out if they are facing the wrong way, but the board does not have this because the first layer is pretty complex already and to add this would present another source of possible failure.

*The magnets are not necessary in order to use the set.
