Description

A fast-to-print reusable spool adapter ring for using cardboard spools in the Bambu Labs AMS, with profiles for 0.4mm, 0.6mm and 0.8mm nozzles.

Features:

  • Prints reliably without supports.
  • Attaches securely without glue.
  • Prints in under 9 minutes with a 0.4mm nozzle (7 minutes with a 0.8mm nozzle). The print time is dependent on the type of filament and its max volumetric speed.
  • Uses less than 6g of filament with a 0.4mm nozzle.
  • Works reliably in the AMS.
  • Installs easily (can be done one-handed: push-click on).
  • Works with spools with damaged edges (cardboard delaminating, frayed, dented etc).
  • Can be removed and reused easily.
  • Can be easily XY scaled to fit other size cardboard spools.
  • Doesn't obscure any of the holes around the edges of spools for securing filament.

Tested with cardboard spools from:

  • 3DHoJor
  • 3DQF (use the 3QDF profile, which is XY scaled by 97%)
  • Anycubic
  • Comgrow
  • Creality
  • Creator (use the Eryone profile, which is XY scaled by 98.5%)
  • Duramic
  • Elegoo (use the Tighter Fit profile, which is XY scaled by 99.5%)
  • eSun
  • Eryone (use the Eryone profile, which is XY scaled by 98.5%)
  • Inland
  • Matter3D (use the Eryone profile, which is XY scaled by 98.5%)
  • Overture
  • Polymaker (PolyMax, PolyTerra, PolyLite etc)
  • Redline
  • Siddament (the Siddament profile is XY scaled 99% to fit their spools after being dried - I found that they shrunk a little).
  • Sovol

It should also be fine with cardboard spools from other filament vendors including:

  • Canadian Filaments
  • Filamentive
  • Filaments.ca
  • Jayo
  • X3D
  • Ziro

Please let me know if it works with spools from other vendors or needs to be scaled for spools from other vendors.

I suggest printing in PETG for spools of low temperature filaments (PLA etc) and ASA, ABS or PC for higher temperature filaments, so that you can leave the spool rings on when you dry a spool. PLA works ok for low temperature filaments but may shrink/loosen/distort when in a filament dryer over time.

After attaching each ring, check that the inside edge of the spool is sitting inside the ring all the way around. If it won't pop into place (normally because the edge of the cardboard is damaged) then run the wide part of a flat blade screwdriver around the edge of the inside of the spool to push the cardboard into place.

Thankyou for photo and for testing it on an Anycubic spool.

Hi there. May I ask what is this blue adapter in the picture?

It doesn't work on Anycubic spool! The spool has a diameter of 199mm and the ring only 196.4! I scale it to 99,8%, It's okay now.

the prints were good however I think the spools are different sizes, it fits one spool perfectly but another loose both from the same manufacturer.

Yeah, there can be a bit of variation. That’s why there’s a profile for a tighter fit, which is XY scaled 99.5%. It’s the 3rd profile in the list.

I really think it has to do with the cheap spools I have. since one was tight and one was loose. The prints over all works great.

If it’s perfectly on cardboard spools. Specifically, the inland ones.

Printed 2 of these in calibrated Bambu Lab ASA on X1C, neither one fit on my Inland PLA+ without splitting at the seam. The spool is nearly like the one in the photo (bought in Oct 2024). It was off by an inch or so least, so likely would need to be scaled up, but I'm unsure how to do it without blowing through a bunch more filament. Can only print one at a time. Also, note: I waited for full cooldown to room temp before removing from build plate because I thought the second might have shrunk.

they snap onto my spool just right, unfortunately the spool is a little big for the AMS so I just have to leave it unlocked to avoid issues when the filament is winding back.

Have the same problem with RedLine Filament. But I think it’s a temporary problem until my old filaments are used up. then I will get smaller ones :)

The profile for the eryone spools fits this creator burnt titanium petg perfectly.

Thanks for your comment and the photo. I'll add Creator to the list of tested spools. The filament in your photo looks pretty nice too.

It's pretty nice! That scheme isn't normally my vibe, but I just wanted to check it out, it's a lot more subtle than I thought it would be, which I like, at first glance it almost looks black with just a touch of green or purple. When it gets good light then it's more pronounced. It printed great as well.

Thanks for adding a photo. Looks like it's a Duramic spool?

This is by far my favorite spool adapter. Almost all of the options out there are not even close to universal. And the ones that have nubs that fit into the holes of the spool break very easily because you have to force them and and they don't want to come off. This one is super simple to use and is very reusable. I printed my in PETG+ so they are durable but flexible. I plan on having these sets for a very long time!

It works perfectly with Polyterra filament rolls. I tried others that didn’t work, but this one is perfect and prints quickly.
