Printable files and quantities:

Utility carabiner: 1X

Printing Instructions:

Printing the utility carabiner is straightforward and does not require any special configurations. Use standard 3D printing profiles for optimal results.

Layer height: 0.2 mm (0.15 mm recommended for detail)

Infill: 100% for maximum strength

Material: PLA or PETG (for added flexibility)

As you scale the model larger, it’s recommended to increase the number of perimeters to maintain a balance between rigidity and flexibility. PETG is preferred for larger prints as it remains more flexible compared to PLA.

Tool Objective:

The objective is simple: provide a secure and versatile clip for everyday use. The pre-tensioned mechanism ensures the carabiner stays closed, while the dual safety notches prevent unintended lateral openings and deformation under load. The carabiner is designed to be printed at 100% infill for maximum durability and can be scaled up to 150% without compromising its functionality. By adjusting the number of perimeters, you can customize the flexibility and rigidity to suit your needs. Tests have shown that the static breaking load for the model scaled to 150% is 24 Kgf or 235 N.

Did You Know?

The modern carabiner was invented by Otto Herzog, a German climber, in the early 20th century. Herzog’s design revolutionized climbing and many other industries by providing a quick and secure way to connect ropes and other gear. Today, carabiners are essential tools for climbers, adventurers, and everyday users alike, offering safety and convenience in a compact form.

I’m new to makerworld, and I have a question. How do I rate models? I wanted to rate you but I didn’t know how to.

I'm new too :| I found this guide in the questions section of the MakerWorld site - Usage Guidelines > Point 3: https://makerworld.com/en/faq It says that it can be rated once printed, so I assume that it must be printed on a bambulab (probably by opening the print profile directly on bambu studio) to ensure that bambu studio communicates to makerworld that the printing has been completed, alternatively if you used another printer or it doesn't show you any model to rate in the ratings section of your account, don't worry, no problem :)

Failed during tension test, clip delaminated. Printed with PLA and provided settings.

Thank you for your feedback! Could you provide more details about how you conducted the tension test? Also, which brand of PLA did you use?

I used Bambu Matte black PLA which was purchased several weeks ago. For the torsion test, I hooked the clip to a bar with the other end tethered to a strap and simply pulled up. Didn't take much force to cause both Clips to fail.

Thank you for the additional details! Matte PLA, like the one you used, tends to deform more easily and reach failure sooner compared to stiffer PLAs, which may hold their shape longer before breaking sharply. It’s important to note that the carabiner is meant for general use, such as holding keys or accessories, and not for heavy-duty tasks. In our tests, a PLA-printed version failed at around 24kg, which can be reached with manual pulling. Of course, material choice and print settings can significantly affect its durability!

I reduced the height to fit through a particular part and it worked great. The words on the outer perimeter caused some odd internals in the slicer. I had some kids report they broke after a few days fiddling around with them and it appeared to be along those odd internal shapes. Good stuff though.

Thank you for the feedback! Just wondering, did you print it in PLA? If so, I’d recommend trying it in PETG, as it tends to be more durable!

PLA permanently deforms after first squeeze

Thank you for the 4-star rating and the feedback! Yes, PLA is indeed much less flexible compared to PETG, so it tends to lose its original shape more easily after squeezing. I’d definitely recommend trying to print with a PETG profile, as it will perform much better for this design! Feel free to follow us as we’ll be publishing new models periodically.

work fine and very fast to print. A slower setting will make better quality.
