HOW TO:

Materials Needed:

• LED earring (available on Amazon, Temu, Wish, Alibaba, etc.)
• 3mm flickering LED (available on Amazon, Temu, Wish, Alibaba, etc.)
• Sandpaper
• Soldering tools
• Wire cutters
• Flexible sanding disc and Dremel tool (optional)
• For the lantern i suggest SLA printer or a printer with a .2 nozzle and 0.06 layer height

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Preparing the LED Earring:

• Purchase the LED Earring: LED earrings can be sourced from various online retailers such as Amazon, Temu, Wish, and Alibaba.
• Trimming the Earring Base: Using wire cutters, snip off the legs of the earring. Continue to trim around the base to reduce its size. The aim is to trim the base to approximately 3mm. Be sure to leave the center post intact, as it serves as the negative contact, while the outer housing of the earring acts as the positive contact.

2. Modifying the LED:

• Soldering the LED: Solder the negative lead of the 3mm flicker LED to the center post of the earring. Then, solder the positive lead of the LED to the earring base. This connection is crucial for ensuring the LED functions correctly.
• Shaping the LED: Use a flexible sanding disc on a Dremel tool, if necessary, to further trim and shape the LED base. This will help fit it neatly into the lantern.

3. Creating the Lantern:

• LED as Lantern Glass: The 3mm flicker LED will serve as the glass of the lantern. To enhance the appearance, use sandpaper to scuff up the plastic of the LED. This will give it an aged glass look and help diffuse the light for a more realistic flicker effect.
• Printing the Lantern: It is recommended to print the lantern using an SLA printer or a printer with a .2 nozzle and 0.06 layer height for the best detail and finish.

4. Assembling the Lantern:

• Attaching the Lantern: To turn the lantern on, simply press down on the top. To turn it off, lift the lantern slightly off the crate or barrel.
• Height Considerations: The object should be approximately 16.5-17mm tall. For taller objects, some modifications to the design may be necessary.
• Fitting the Earring: The earring can drop into a pocket from the top, but you may need to modify the base of the lantern to cover the larger hole. Alternatively, you can create a riser to place under the earring, allowing the larger part to fit from the bottom and maintain a smaller hole on top.

Additional Tips:

• Soldering: Ensure a secure connection when soldering the LED leads to the earring contacts to avoid loose connections.
• Sanding: Scuff the LED gently to avoid damaging it, while achieving a diffused, realistic glass look.
• Customization: Feel free to customize the lantern design to fit different sizes or styles of crates and barrels in your tabletop setup.
