On May the 4th this Logo was released officially! Every Star Wars Fan who bought an certain amount of Star Wars Sets, got a paper-bag with this Logo instead. The letter L E G O in the aurebesh alphabet with the famous brick designe. On eBay the bags are sold for hundreds of euros. I have one, so i started recreating it as a Light box.

The print file is set up, so you just have to load the correct colors and press print.

Features

Printed LED guide for up to 10mm width.

The LEDs can go in and out directly in the Base

The base ca be secured with self adhesive door bumper
Common USB-C socket can be used to power the light box.nice looking light box!

Recommendation

For Material

go with the one you like. I used PLA:

For LEDs

There are so many. I made 2 boxes. One with programmable RGB LEDs + ESP32 and one with pure cold white COB LEDs. Both running on 5V via USB-C. If soldering isn't really your thing, you can use the LED set from Bambulab. It includes everything you need, including a remote control.

COB LED i used: BTF COB LED cold white Amazon* | AliExpress*
RBG LED i used: BTF WS2812 ECO 60pix/m Amazon* | AliExpress*

Printing

There are 3 plates you need to print. Starting with plate 1 and plate 2, these are the essential part of the whole thing. Plate 1 is the Logo with the box walls. be careful and clean nozzle an print bed before starting the print. Plate 2 is straight forward to print, its just the lid/back plate of the box.

Plate 1 and 2 are the light box and lid.

For the base you can choose between 2 variants: plate 3a or 3b

Basically the whole difference is the size and form of the hole in the back.
Plate 3a is designed to fit an USB-C socket. You can get it from Amazon*, AliExpress (here* or here*) or anywhere else.

Plate 3b is designed just to fit the power cable

ONLY ONE OF BOTH PLATES!

Bill of Materials

  • You'll need ~70cm of any LED strip light you like with a power source of choice
  • a bit of aluminum foil with a glue-stick or aluminium tape*

Optional:

  • USB-C socket. You can get it from Amazon*, AliExpress (here* or here*) or anywhere else.
  • superglue (if you want to permanently seal the box)
  • self adhesive door bumper (~8mm). You can get it from Amazon*, AliExpress*, i use the Ikea spare parts for that
  • Microcontroller like an basic ESP32.

Assembly

Step 1

Guide the LED stripe and/or power cable trough the holes in the back part of the base. If you don't have to solder anything you can put the base together. I should press-fit. Be gentle! This step can be skipped if you're sure.

Step 2

glue the LED strip in place. Use the guide to align the LED stripe parallel to the edge.

Step 3

Now its time to test the LEDs if they work.

Step 4

Let's prepare the lid. I recommend to cover the inner part of it with aluminum foil or tape. This reflects the light and achieves an even light distribution.

You'll need the lid, a gluestick an aluminum foilapply the glue
pay attention, which side is matte and which on is shiny. You want the shiny one to reflect.press firmly
let it dry a bituse a sharp knife or your fingernail to cut it around the inner edge

Step 5

If everything works fine, put the lid in place, check if everything works (yes again, better save than sorry). now glue the base and lid to the box.

Step 6

Have fun!
