Description

Skee Ball: A Marble Arcade Series Game - A 1980s Flashback

Introducing the first game in our series of fun marble arcade games that are modular, easy to assemble, and incredibly entertaining. At Ozarkexpeditions, our mission is to create toys, games, and functional prints with high replay value that everyone in the family will want to gather around and play. Whether you're looking for solo play to take a break from work or a fun competition with friends and family, this game is perfect for you.

Inspired by retro-style arcade games, our first release is a personal favorite that transports you back to the 1980s arcade and bowling alley experience. Our modular design ensures easy assembly, and the game promises endless fun. We have several marble arcade games lined up for release over the next few weeks and months, each designed to keep the excitement alive.

📢 Spring Launcher Beta now live! Find in in the print profiles and let us know what you think. It's a fun challenge, but requires a few non-printed parts.

📢 New! Sell physical prints of any of my designs by joining my new Patreon subscription and support more great future designs!

Game Play:

  • Setup: Position the Skee Ball game on a flat surface and ensure the balls are ready in the starting area.
    • Required marble size: 8mm, either from our Amazon link (https://amzn.to/3MtnRG7) or at the Maker's Supply link below.
  • Objective: The goal is to score as many points as possible by getting balls into the target rings with one of the ball launchers.
  • Gameplay:
    • Solo Play: Roll each ball up the ramp, aiming to land them in the highest scoring rings.
    • Competition: Take turns with other players, rolling the balls and trying to outscore your opponents.
  • Scoring: After all balls are rolled, add up the points based on the values of the target rings where the balls landed. Each ring has a different point value, clearly marked on the ball return area of the game.
  • Winning: The player or team with the highest total score wins the game! 🎉

Printing & Assembly:

Assembly is literally a snap, as this game is fully 3D printed. Follow these simple steps to get started:

  1. Prepare the Pieces: All pieces are oriented in the print profiles for the best printing experience.
  2. Attach the Main Game Plate:
    • Align the main game plate with the base's alignment snaps.
    • Press the plate down firmly until you hear a satisfying click, ensuring the pieces are snug.
  3. Install the Backboard:
    • Align the backboard with the base using the alignment pegs.
    • Carefully apply a little bit of force to fit the pieces together snugly.

Next, print the launcher of your choice. For now, we recommend printing the handheld launcher, but if you're feeling adventurous, try the spring launcher. Check back for other styles of launchers we will have available soon.

With these easy steps, your Skee Ball game will be ready for play in no time.

Feedback

As with any new game design, I would love to hear your feedback on how we can update the actual printed design to continue making it fun and engaging. Post your build photos, give us a download, and if you want to see more cool projects, give a boost! 🚀

See our Mini Golf Arcade game as well!

Disclaimer: This model is compatible with the Maker's Beginner Kit B-ZC002. The kit includes various non-printed parts to accommodate multiple popular models. As a result, some parts may not be necessary for this specific model. Edit: the beta version of the spring launcher is now available in a new print profile. 🙂 Hey everyone! We’re working on a spring loaded version of the launcher. We should have this finalized in the next few days but wanted to share the prototype. 😊

Hey everyone, this print profile is now available above! Please not that this does a specific spring and glue. I hope to make another version in the future where it's just thread on, but this seems to work well for now. 😀 I'll post the GIF soon.

Who doesn't love Skee Ball?!? [[And if you don't, you probably still wet the bed]]. As soon as this came off the printer, I attached the spring-o-matic launcher 9k series, loaded an 8mm bearing, and hit my wife in the chest from 6ft away (approx 2meters if you use normal measurements) [I think the ramp might be a bit "steep"] Regardless, I shot balls. Balls went in holes. I scored. (All puns intended) love it... Another killer design from OzarkExpeditions. Kind of like Pokemon, gotta print them all!!!

ha, good review! we should probably redesign the ramp or at least have some different versions with different slopes.

Just a thought, but what if the slope was articulated so it could be changed?

Spring Launcher for Marble Arcades - Beta
I love the concept. The ramp launcher works great, and I was hoping the spring launcher would be even better. Unfortunately I found it to be a bit finicky. One marble would fly way over the backboard and the next wouldn't even make it off the ramp, despite feeling like I'm launching at the same power. I think this is partially because the marble wouldn't always roll back into the plunger, and partially because the tolerance between the plunger and it's casing is a bit tight. Great first design!

@robere2 Thank you for taking the time to print my design and provide such detailed feedback! I really appreciate your thoughts and the boost. As this is a beta version for the spring launcher meant for gathering user experiences, your insights are incredibly valuable for improving the design. I wanted to mention that on MakerWorld, ratings below 4 stars are treated negatively for designers though it says “average” on the feedback form. That might prevent others from trying it out and providing more feedback. Given that you mentioned loving the concept and that it's a great first design, would you consider adjusting your rating? If not, no worries - your feedback is still very helpful for refining the next iteration. Designers are working with the MakerWorld Developers to help make this more clear for everyone. Regarding the score order, I wanted to have a little different design from the original Skee Ball, but it wouldn’t be hard to change the order on another version. Thanks again for your support and for being part of the development process!

I've thought about it but ultimately it comes down to the fact that this requires external parts and 170g of filament, while the ramp requires no external parts and only has 90g. I do love the concept and think it's a great prototype, but I rated 3 stars because currently I cannot recommend anyone build this model instead of the ramp. I relate to wanting to gather more feedback, but it'd feel disingenuous to increase my rating so more people will give that feedback to you. Hope you understand!

Also, about the score order, I think having 50 points in the middle actually makes sense, I just meant the order in which the balls come out on the side. Either way, just personal preference so doesn't affect my rating of the model at all 😁I increased my rating on the main model itself, because on hindsight, I don't think the small issue with marbles getting stuck warrants docking that extra star.

I printed and tested the spring launcher and here are my findings. As I'm left handed the handle was at the wrong side for me. I also found it difficult to aim and pull at the same time using the handle. To overcome this and make it suitable for left- and righthanded individuals I glued a little handle on top. This makes the big handle obsolete. (red crossed on the picture). You will also notice that I put a piece of cardboard at the front of the launcher (ca. 1 mm). This helps to keep the ball positioned in front of the plunger. If you give the ramp a little slope right from the start, or give the launcher a little slope you will have the same effect. In my opinion, but not tested yet, giving the ramp a little slope right from the start to keep the ball before the plunger and make the ramp a little less steep at the end will have a positive impact on the gameplay. I tested this on the Skee ball and Mini golf game, which I both love btw.

Hi @user_2770294795 first off, a big thanks for testing and providing great feedback! Last night, I made an updated design, where instead of using a metal spring and having to glue parts, it uses a compliant mechanism for the spring and snaps together, requiring only printed parts. I plan on doing some more testing soon and then publishing this print profile. From my initial test, it gives the user more flexibility on the accuracy when you pull back. There is also an indent for the ball to rest while you are pulling back so it doesn't roll forward. I like the concept of the knob on the top. This is a great suggestion and I'll look into it further.

Glad to help. I assume that the new design only concerns the launcher and that the ramp stays untouched? I will test the new design as soon as it's available.

@user_2770294795 Yes, you would be able to remove the pin on the launcher and reuse the ramp.

@gajdot The new spring launcher profile is now available in beta as a new print profile. It requires a spring and glue. Hoping to create another launcher in the next few weeks that is fully printable, but this one is pretty fun, too. New GIF in the photos.
