Materials

  • Can be printed using Bambu ASA Aero or PETG filaments, both known for their durability and weather-resistant properties.

Instructions:

Step 1: Attaching the Fishing Line to the Reel

Locate the Hole on the Reel:

  • Identify the small hole on the side of the reel, as indicated by the yellow arrow in the image below.

Insert the Fishing Line:

  • Push the end of the fishing line through the hole on the reel.

Secure the Fishing Line:

  • Tie a knot on the end of the fishing line to secure it in place, ensuring it doesn't spin around the center. A simple overhand knot or a figure-eight knot can be used to achieve this.

Step 2: Attaching the Turning Knob to the Reel Body

Prepare the Reel Components:

  • Locate the turning knob, the turning knob bolt and the upper reel body. Make sure you have the knob and the body as shown in the image below.

Position the Reel Body:

  • Ensure the chamfer in the middle of the upper reel body is facing upwards. This is crucial for proper assembly and function of the reel.

Attach the Turning Knob:

  • Align the base of the turning knob with the hole on the top of the reel body.
  • Press the knob into place, ensuring that it fits securely. You may need to apply a slight pressure until the knob clicks or sits firmly.

This step secures the turning knob to the reel body, which is essential for the proper mechanical operation of the fishing reel. Check that the knob turns smoothly without resistance once attached.

Step 3: Aligning the Upper and Lower Reel Bodies

Prepare the Reel Components:

  • Have the upper reel body with the attached turning knob ready.
  • Locate the lower reel body.

Align the Reel Bodies:

  • Place the upper reel body on top of the lower reel body.
  • Ensure that the holes in the upper reel body align with the corresponding holes in the lower reel body. The yellow arrows in the image indicate the alignment points.

Check for Proper Fit:

  • Make sure the components sit flush against each other without any gaps.
  • Verify that the turning knob is correctly positioned and can rotate freely.

Step 4: Attaching the Reel to the Attach Arm

Prepare the Reel and Attach Arm:

  • Have the assembled reel (upper and lower reel bodies) and the attach arm ready.
  • Locate the long bolt and nut required for this step.

Align the Components:

  • Position the reel against the attach arm, ensuring the holes for the bolt are aligned.

Insert the Long Bolt:

  • Slide the long bolt through the aligned holes from one side of the reel, through the attach arm, and out the other side of the reel.

Secure with Nut:

  • Attach the nut to the end of the bolt and tighten it to secure the reel to the attach arm. If the nut tends to come loose, consider using a small amount of glue to hold it in place.

Step-by-Step Assembly Instructions for Collapsible Fishing Rod

Step 5: Attaching the Reel to the Collapsing Rod

Prepare the Components:

  • Ensure you have the assembled reel with the attach arm and the collapsing rod ready.

Align the Reel with the Rod:

  • Position the attach arm of the reel into the slot on the handle of the collapsing rod, as indicated by the red arrow in the image.

Insert and Secure:

  • Slide the attach arm into the slot until it fits snugly.
  • If needed, you can use screws or glue to secure the attach arm in place, ensuring that the reel is firmly attached to the rod.

Final Check:

  • Ensure the reel is securely attached and operates smoothly.
  • Extend the rod segments to verify the collapsible mechanism works correctly.

This is the final step in assembling your collapsible fishing rod. With the reel securely attached to the rod, your fishing gear is now ready for use.

Summary of Assembly Steps:

  1. Step 1: Attach the fishing line to the reel by pushing it through the hole and tying a secure knot.
  2. Step 2: Attach the turning knob to the upper reel body, ensuring the chamfer faces upwards.
  3. Step 3: Align the upper and lower reel bodies and secure them together.
  4. Step 4: Attach the reel to the attach arm using the long bolt and nut, securing them tightly.
  5. Step 5: Attach the reel to the collapsing rod by sliding the attach arm into the rod’s handle slot.

Your collapsible fishing rod is now fully assembled and ready for your next fishing adventure. Happy fishing!

The design is really nice but I do not believe one second this would hold up in a "real fishing" situation, given the orientation of the layer lines in the rod and the forces even small fishes can exert on a typical rod. Very neat however for a toy :)

printed without any issues however the tolerance for the tubes and for the spool holder is to great so the tubes just slip out without any force at all as well as the spool holder

This is awesome. I think it could handle bluegill and other small panfish the kids like to catch.

Can it be used after scaling down?

Absolutely. I printed it scaled to 70% which I found to be perfect for 4-5 year old kid as a toy. The issue with the tubes coming out is still present, however. I had to fix each tube with heat - it's easy to do, since you have access to the tubes from the bottom. The rod is good, but I have designed my own reel. The absence of a break, or ratchet makes it unravel the moment you let go of the reel. Still do recommend

could you share the reel design please?

great design but I'm so curious how this is functionally strong if the collapsible tubes are printer vertical where the layers can easily snap off due to the layer orientation.. is this made as a toy ? no matter what type of filament no way this can withstand tension with out deamination or snapping

Does the rod stay up?

I came to the comment section for this exact reason.

Sure. Its a fully functional fishing rod. You need to pull a little on the top for better locking

How was your experience with PLA? I'd like to make a fishing rod for a friend and myself, and I was considering using PLA as well

the reel doesn’t snap in place and the rod is flimsy and comes apart easily. there should be a version 2 to fix these problems because a string tied to a stick is a better fishing rod than this
