Description

What in tarnation is a Guitar Chess Set?

This is a full set of chess pieces thematically designed around guitars, compliant to the International Chess Federation dimension recommendations.

The goals of this project were to:

  • have immediately and clearly identifiable chess pieces
  • print without use of supports
  • not require screws/magnets/bolts/etc.
  • meet full-size competitive chess dimensional standards
  • match guitar styles appropriately to given chess pieces

---

Ok Mr. Chessington, how do I make this thing?

1. Download chess piece files

  • (recommended) If using "complete_pieces_per_side.3mf", pieces are pre-oriented and ready to print
  • If using individual .stl files, please ensure that each base is oriented with slot facing up, and pieces are oriently horizontally along its flat face

2. Print!
3. Insert piece's bottom block into corresponding base slot. The tolerance is fairly tight, and once inserted should hold securely

  • If too tight, either file down piece's bottom block or scale down by 1% and re-print piece
  • If too loose, lightly sand the piece's bottom block and the base slot, apply super glue / loctite, and reinsert

4. pwn low ELO scrubs with the power of rock n' roll

---

That's neat and all, but how much space do these fellers take up?

Piece dimensions match International Chess Federation dimension standards, and are as follows:
Pawn: 2.5cm diameter, 5cm height
Rook: 2.75cm diameter, 5.5cm height
Knight: 3cm diameter, 6cm height
Bishop: 3.5cm diameter, 7cm height
Queen: 4.25cm diameter, 8.5cm height
King: 4.75cm diameter, 9.5cm height

Ideal matching chess board size is 5cm squares.

Models can safely be scaled up and down as needed.

Printed in ABS for my son -in-law. Perfect as he is a guitarist. I then printed 64 50mm squares (32 white, 32 black) and mounted them in a 3/8" x 16-1/2" square plywood. Cut adhesive felt bases using a Cricut Maker 3. The set is much admired.

amazing set it is lighter than most chess sets so be careful you might knock it over and it does require some glue, but otherwise is an amazing set. I can’t wait to play.

super stoked to hear that!! Thanks for the feedback! In the future, I'm considering adding room in the base for optional washers for added weight, and a more secure locking mechanism
