Description

DISCLAIMERS:

  • Print profiles NOT created by DesignCraft may contain outdated model versions or suboptimal slicer settings. Use at your own risk! I have no control to moderate or remove these third party print profiles.
  • This model may not fit all ELEGOO cardboard spools. Please review the photos and spool measurements before printing.

Description:

This adapter system wraps the edges of an ELEGOO 1kg 199x64mm cardboard spool in order to:

  • provide smooth rotation within a Bambu Lab AMS
  • prevent carboard debris from depositing within a Bambu Lab AMS

Features:

  • Reusable
  • ELEGOO nameplate for easy identification when reusing

Instructions:

  • Measure your spool first to ensure it matches the specified dimensions
  • Print this model twice for a single spool
  • Affix one spool ring adapter on each side of the ELEGOO spool
  • See attached photos

Considerations:

  • Print Material: Please print with a basic PLA or PETG to minimize any shrinkage.
  • Too Tight? Too Loose? Cardboard expands with humidity and contracts when dried. A cardboard spool that has absorbed too much moisture may cause the adapters to fit very tight. Placing the spool in a filament dryer, such as the SUNLU S2, for a bit should resolve this. Note, you should not dry the spool with the adapters attached as they can warp in the heat. Keep in mind that after a long drying session the adapters may fit too loose. This should resolve itself shortly as the cardboard reabsorbs some moisture from the air.
  • AMS Lid Doesn't Close? All of the spool adapters I make are less than the official AMS spool clearance limit of 202mm, as specified on the official AMS product page, and as tested within my own AMS. However, some people have stated their spools are rubbing against the lid with the adapters attached. It's hard to say what's causing this since I cannot reproduce the issue myself, however, I've created an AMS Lid Riser which allows you to keep your AMS lid closed while providing additional clearance for larger filament spools. It's a quick and easy print which you can find on my profile or directly here: https://makerworld.com/en/models/33133

DONT DO WHAT I DID— Man do I have a quick story. So after printing these they were Jsut a little bit to big, there’s this one print I really wanna make but I only have the colors for it in elegoo. So out of impatients/ excitement I decided I would just glue them to the rolls. The first time it went perfect as you can see in the double sided orange picture. However when it was time to glue the second one, the lid of my super glue was glue shut, and as I decided I had the skills to remove the lid and try and “dabble” some glue on. But of course it simply went absolutely everywhere. considering it was Al over my desk already I decided to put a towel down and the fillament on top so it didn’t get glue everywhere AND put a heavy box on top to make sure the glue settles nicely (I did do this with the first one as well). -Also all of that was at about 1am last night. Anyways, so I woke up this morning to all 3 parts entirely sticking to each other. I’m honestly not sure what I expected.. but in turn of trying to get the towel off.. it pulled the fillament open.. and completely ripped the towel apart. oh.. and it’s still connected to the box. I left photos below. And if you want another kick.. in the glue photo you can see an ornament that I made.. ya that’s superglues to the desk rn. ALL THAT TO SAY.. don’t do what I did. I mostly shared this because I knew people would laugh, so feel free to shame me in the comments I won’t mind. I honestly am not allowed to work at 1am anymore. ———————— Material used: - 4 elegoo spool adapters (2 remain) - An innocent towel that has to be thrown away -A broken super glue lid, and over half of the glue gone - A random box that will not let go of the spool adapter - A few hours of work ————- Oh and I still can’t use the 2 colors to print my thing I started all this for😭👍 Marry Christmas Everyone! 🎅🧑‍🎄🤶 Redit version: https://www.reddit.com/r/BambuLab/s/wqQgCdUVnB

Quite a story! Unfortunately there tends to be some variance with Elegoo spools. While the current size works well for most people some smaller Elegoo spools have been reported. I would recommend measuring the spool diameter and slightly scaling down the model to compensate. If the spool is only slightly smaller than the adapter as to where the adapter rotates independently from the spool, a single 2 inch (50mm) piece of tape over the edge, from the outer cardboard wall to the inner wall, should be enough to keep it in place. I hope this helps!

UPDATE: Definitely read all the instructions because even though they were freshly opened spools, the cardboard had indeed expanded and needed to be dried as the designer suggested below. After that, they fit perfectly and work amazingly well! Unfortunately, they were too small. Actually broke them trying to get them on. I was using the Elegoo Rapid PLA+ though so maybe not the same size. The prints came out great though!

Thank you for rating and sorry you're having issues. If the spool measures the same at 199mm in diameter then it's possible the spool has absorbed moisture and expanded a bit. I would try a few hours in a filament dryer to see if that helps. I have some notes related to this in the model description under "Considerations". I will also try to get my hands on an Elegoo Rapid PLA+ spool and run some tests. Thank you for the feedback it's very helpful!

Thank you for the rating and feedback! If the adapters feel too tight to attach it's likely the cardboard spool has expanded from humidity. This is very common even with new spools straight out of the packaging. My go-to solution in this case is to dry the spool in a filament dryer for a few hours to remove any excess moisture from the cardboard and apply the adapters afterwards. I hope this helps!

Thank you for the reply. Scaling up the model will make it too large to close the AMS lid properly however I do have an AMS Lid Riser model linked in the model description that will provide additional clearance for larger spools. With that said I do highly recommend a filament dryer and would deem it a necessity for anyone who prints frequently. I'm personally to the point where I dry all new spools before printing because new filament usually isn't dry enough for optimal prints. I use Sunlu S2 filament dryers which have been working great. I hope this helps!
