Description

Great original model - but I wanted to remix slightly to open up use-cases to wider application. The idea of a clear back to utilize the light in the console is brilliant - but I typically don't use PLA for automotive applications or where temperatures can be very high. Clear PETG is great but I typically don't like the final (glossy) appearance - so ASA is usually my go-to for car parts. Since there's no clear ASA, I remixed this model by:

  • Making slots in the rear of the tray - this would allow printing without use of clear filament at all. Light from console would simply shine through the slots. I've also filleted the slots to help with strength.
  • I provided a back cover that can be printed in clear PETG. This cover can then be superglued to the rear of the tray but act as a diffuser. This way light can still come through to the tray but you cannot see through the slots.
  • Finally, I also made the tray 10mm longer - I felt the original was a little short compared to other trays I've seen/used.

it printed just fine. I had a layer shift and the whole thing is off by a hair. I’m not sure what happened. Might just be some printer calibration on my end. good print!

thanks for the review and posting the Make. once it's in the console you are going to be the only one who knows about the layer shift :)

Had the same layer shift printing ASA. I didn't think the corners had lifted, but it appears that's what caused the layer shift as the end isn't completely flat now. Might try reprinting it with a large brim.

sorry to hear! ASA is definitely a trickier material, especially on longer prints. I've had some success by letting the chamber warm up (I think to 40°C) before starting the print. I just let the bed heat up the chamber and when it reaches that temp I let it print. I also sealed up the glass door on the hinge side a bit and printed a poop chute that essentially covers the hole in the back...all to try and keep temperature as stable as possible for ASA prints. Hope it works out on the next run but honestly as I told another person, this thing sits in the console and will be full of stuff...nobody will ever see the layer shift.

nice improvement in length exactly what I needed. Additional request make it 5 mm deeper, or people can just simple adjust the setting in slicer. If you add 5 mm you can easily stuck cards vertically and be able to slide the bin back!

I believe this profile needs to be taken down. I printed it using the app on my phone and noticed when I got home that it was incorrectly oriented. The orientation is wrong and there are no supports, which made the print unsuccessful.

While you are certainly entitled to your opinion there are plenty other users out there who have successfully printed the model just the way it is. There are even pictures of successful prints. That said, I am sorry it did not work for you but it's not an issue with the model.

seems like this is not a print profile issue but rather you selected the wrong filament?
