Description

Description

What is the purpose of this model?

This is a protective terminal cap for use on standard 9V batteries. Some benefits include:

  • Protects 9V batteries when not in use
  • Shields the battery contacts, reducing the risk of a short circuit
  • Protects battery contacts from damage due to dust, dirt and contamination
  • Prevents unwanted electrical discharges

For the city where I live, when we recycle batteries, we are asked to put electrical tape over the terminals before putting them in a zip lock bag so they don't short circuit. At less than a gram of plastic each, I just print these instead of using tape.

I designed these to use as little filament as possible but still do the job. You could clone a bunch and print a whole build plate full without using much filament.

Fitment Note

Despite there being a “standard” for terminal sizes and spacing, there is just enough +/- in the spec standard (and printer tolerances) that the caps fit some brands of 9V batteries slightly better than others. This has been tested on many brands, however and should work well enough.

If for your printer and battery brand is one of the rare combinations where it is too tight, scale up the model by 1% for PLA/PETG or consider TPU. This model should work as-is for 99% of you with no modifications in whatever material you want to use.

Thanks! I saw a company that sells something very similar, but the minimum order quantity was too many so I decided to model my own :-). Glad others are finding it useful.

I printed these in PLA. They fit quite tight but when I went to remove them, both tabs broke, so I had one piece of PLA stuck inside one terminal and a ring stuck over the other. I was able to remove them with a small screwdriver. I then printed them in TPU and this time they worked great. They still fit tight but at least the tabs don't break off.

This is the first I've heard of them coming out so tight! Myself and many others have printed and used these successfully in PLA. I did mention that there is a decent amount of tolerance in the "spec" for these terminals so the size can vary (slightly, but still) between brands. And then add in variability for printers and different rate of shrinkage for different filaments...I could see where there might be a perfect storm! For you, I'd probably suggest scaling it (PLA) up to 102%
