Turn that cardboard spool into a jar! Choose from 17 handcrafted patterns or choose none, it's up to you. There are 2 lid types available, a locking lid and a screw in lid. There is also the option to not use a lid. Add dividers to create sections inside of the cardboard spool, you can choose anywhere from 0 to 8. Add a connector or two to stack multiple cardboard spools. Click the customize button above to get started!
The ends that connect to the cardboard spool contain small points within the cylinders. Since most of my Bambu cardboard spools aren't exactly the same diameter, this will enables the ends to grip the cardboard and account for these differences in diameter. It may take a little bit of force, but they are not going to fall off.
Customize
Click the customize button above to load the Parametric Model Maker with the OpenScad code.
For exporting an STL or a single plate 3MF, select the SpoolJarGenerator_STL option.
For exporting only a 3MF with the option to make the model multi plate, select the SpoolJarGenerator_3MF option.
Optional - Variable Layer Height - Will create smoother surfaces, this was not used in the examples
Notes
All example profiles were generated with mostly default settings. The only settings changed were patterns, create connector, and create lid depending on the model/profile.
When exporting as a 3MF to open in Bambu Studio, the colors will automatically be assigned based on the colors you choose. I've added all of the Bambu PLA and Bambu PLA Matte colors with their corresponding hex code to the color pickers in the settings.
If you do not want the STL, select the 3MF customizer. This will allow you to export the 3MF with 2 plates for easy multicolor printing with no color swaps.
I have tested this with some non Bambu cardboard spools and it works well. I do not know which brands they were, but some brands will be smaller, larger, or about the same dimensions. I cannot guarantee this will work for all brands. If there is enough interest, I'll update the settings to allow the diameters to be adjusted or you can take measurements and adjust the code. The diameters are set using these two variables: cylOuterDiameter and cylInnerDiameter.
Great work and nice design. Holds together really good. Thank you very much for sharing.
Had some other cardboard role lying around (not from a spool). (Bambu role for comparison)
Changed the settings in the code to make it fit. Also for the "clampPattern", because it would be to large, for such a small role.
Handle in the lid is a bit difficult to grip, at least in this smaller size.
Thanks for the feedback. I'll add some settings for the cardboard size that are configurable in the UI so no one needs to touch the code. I'll also take a look at lid grip and see if i can come up with an adjustable setting.
Printed well, nice different designs. Fits the spool perfectly! I did however use it fit another purpose as i have a Bluetooth speaker that had lost its stand and this fits perfectly!
