Description

New Video on my process of making this model.

Viking inspired actual size axe, ideal for cosplay, larping or wall decoration. When complete it stands approximate 600mm / 2 ft tall.

Note, this axe only chops down 3D printed trees… and then very badly).

It's a modular design for easy printing. The handle has witness marks and lugs to enable easy alignment, but glue is a must. There's printable pegs to enable easy axe head alignment, and there's a circular slot within the design to allow for an optional 6mm / ¼ inch wooden dowel or steel rod, for added strength.

You will need a Midrange Resin printer or an FDM to print this model.

AUTHENTIC DESIGN?
Yes and no. The axe head shape and size is pretty consistent with actual artifacts and the handle length is pretty good too (some were even longer). However the engraving design is purely me channelling my inner Viking. So let's call it Viking inspired.

SECTIONS
This is a modular build with various pieces happily sitting upon each other. Glue is a must!

WHAT TO PRINT
The axe has two halves, one plain, one decorated. If you want both plain or both decorated, then simply mirror the piece with you chosen slicer. Easy as that :-)
You'll need to print 3 pins to help with axe head alignment, then one of each handle part.

INNER DOWEL - VERY IMPORTANT
If you choose to use an optional inner wooden dowel or steel rod, purchase that first! You will need circular stock approx. 540mm / 21 inch long and 1/4 inch or 6mm in diameter.
The inner slot for this measures 6.5mm in diameter and should accommodate both metric or imperial options, but not all printers are calibrated equally.
So buy your dowel first and print handle-1.stl which is the smallest part. Check the fitting. It may be necessary to scale the print up or down to match. To do this, amend the scale in your
slicer to, for example, to 101% or 99%.

FDM
No supports are needed for the handle. Just print upright.
Personally I tilted the axe head sections at 30 degree and supported the back and underside. I found this worked well. I stuck with a standard .20 layer height with 15% infill.

RESIN
Resin printers can print the handle sections without supports, though a midrange printer or larger is needed for the axe head. Just place the files flat of the plate. However, this may produce a "tidemark" on the finished prints. To avoid this you'll need to angle the prints and support as necessary.

Came out amazing! printed in matte brown pla and silver silk pla. I found 6.5mm dowels on Makerworld and used those during assembly. I may be printing a second one!

Sorry to hear that. I don't have a A1 to test with so may have to adjust top z distance on support tab.

My first attempt at the head did that, you can see where the print folded on the support, but after seeing a few examples I'm going to rotate it and print it raised with a ton of support underneath (which will be on the inside of the blade head) First pic = good, second pic = challenging!

I experienced a minor hiccup during printing, but I'm unsure whether it was a profile or printer issue. In any case, it resulted in an unsightly line on the axe head… see image. Overall, it still looks fantastic :)

Print failed from the app, had to reorient blades and had some minor issues with the fit of the alignment points. My fault for not checking in slicer and trying to print from app.
