Description

This is a Filament spool rack. It is designed to print very fast. Speed is number one priority, strength, functionality, and efficiency of materiel use closely follow the speed of this model. Designed specifically for print ability and speed with Bambu PETG HF. Prints in about one hour (in sport mode) each module, and uses less than 75 grams. Try it you will love it.

It also has a curved cut out in the front for ergonomics, so you can easily grab a box off the shelf.

Dry your Bambu PETG HF filament to 10% RH and clean your build plate maybe use super tack plate. ( I used textured PEI )

Use glue for the ends of the side rails first layer 

YOU MUST USE MY PRINT PROFILE it will not print nearly as fast with out it and it probably will be very weak because this model prints with 0.75mm walls with Arachne print style, if you don't know what that is then just trust the .3mf that I provided.

Print base level first as the foundation for the first racked level in each column, and join them side by side if you have more than one column with the side-by-side rail component in the Rack Module print profile.  

Select or unselect side rails or Side-by-Side rails according to your build (I recommend 6 wide and 15+ tall )

Print in sport mode for each module to print in about one hour each module.

DO NOT PRINT IN LUDICROUS MODE the extruder clutch will skip because the nozzle can not melt the plastic fast enough. if you have E3D nozzle try it and report back if it worked or not though. 

this model may be compatible with the Feather weight filament rack but the geometry of this model has been highly optimized for speed of print ability, strength and reliability of fitment. especially with respect to print ability on Bambu Lab A1 printer.   

Use foam tape or double sided stickers to secure your monitor riser platform if it is made of wood or something else that would be slippery if it was simply sitting on top of these FAST-RACK modules. 

Add A1 style support feet from the bill of materials to your base level so that it does not slide around on smooth surfaces!

Remember to install your side and back rails before each new level.

you may need to firmly tap each corner into place to get it to click in place. there should be no gap between module legs when fully seated in to place. when tapping it into place with a small hammer or something be sure that you are tapping it directly in line with the leg to make each corner go into place just like gently driving a nail with a hammer. this is the direction that the legs are the strongest.

this is designed to be more easily assembled and taken apart if you need to. and if you choose to wall mount it the base level should be clipped in strongly enough by design to easily hold up a 1Kg spool, If you choose to wall mount it I recommend that you put wall anchor screws in every hole of the modules for the first four bottom levels. after that you may not need as many.

Wow Thank you @TMcBree for this great picture! Looks like you are doing mostly refills. if you wait I bit I am going to have a dedicated size for refills also that will also clip together with normal size racks. of course normal size racks can take either size. but I am making the refill only size because I figure there are people who might prefer it when they focus on buying refills more than spooled rolls.

I thought the same, but the problem is SOME filaments only come on rolls like glow, metal, sparkle etc. So I am happy with the uniformity from your original design! I will be looking out for all of your futur designs too! These were great!

Thank you! also I designed the base to have small area contacting the floor, and I wondered how it would do with carpet. I see you put yours on carpet, can you say what you think of its stability on carpet? I considered making a base or base attachment that would make it more stable on carpet.

HOLY CRAP !!! you actually did it lol !!!. I hope you have at least the four bottom levels all secured at each level. I would be interested to see a side profile photo to see how much it sags if at all from the cantilever effect. that is impressive! Thank you @Ogisva for being the first one to post a photo of the wall mount configuration. please do keep me updated on how this works for you going forward. truthfully I was considering a revision of the wall mount hole to make it a bit stronger and make it key hole style. I would be happy to see any feedback you have to give from your experience!

Really great shelf. Lowest material per slot of storage that’s on the market right now I believe. I bought four spools of Fugacity PETG for $10/kg so I plan to go crazy with this. probably going to do a 3x7. One thing I struggled with was the print adhering too well to the plate. Only in certain spots. It would just be fused and no matter how delicately I pulled and pried it would always break the shelf surface. Some I have thrown in my stack, but others had large holes punched out.

Ratings are limited to 500 characters but comments can be 5000? Weird. Continuing on from original post: I did various things to troubleshoot my over adhesion. I used a new build plate and that solved the issue for 4 shelves. Then the problem returned again. Finally I realized that it was likely the first layer being set to 1mm in width. The nozzle is only .4mm. How does it get 1mm? By shoving extra filament hard, and it pushing out on either side. The layer lines were gorgeous and the printer / profile did their job, but the filament getting squished extra hard into the build plate was causing it to over adhere / deteriorate the properties of my build plate at a very accelerated rate. I solved this by reducing the first layer line width to .75mm. I have only printed a few more but so far so good. All of this is likely because I am using the cheapest petg on amazon, but I wanted to share my experiences with the rest of the crew. I also had to dial down the max volumetric flow from the 31mm^3/s in the provided profile to 18mm^3/s to get it to extrude properly. So when I realized the 1mm first layer line width was likely to accommodate the intended flow of 31mm^3/s I didn't mind dialing back as it was not necessary for me. Thanks for this great design! if your build plate is new it can be extra tacky at first. it will get seasoned with use. if apply glue to the whole print area, the glue will prevent it from adhering to strong to the plate itself. and you should be able to rinse off the glue with hot water and soap after printing and the adhesion will not be so hard. I had this happen with some prints once in a while when my plate was new. after a few applications of glue and cleaning it was seasoned and I don't have the problem. the layer line being 1mm is not causing the problem, I had that same problem with 0.42mm lines it's really just new build plate problem in my opinion, your cheap PETG should be fine. I would down load the .3mf again to get all the settings back the way they were, and print with glue. the only thing is printing with glue is probably not going to look as pretty because the glue will leave an imprint in the first layer, but it is only a rack shelf and if you have boxes of filament or anything on it then realistically you will not notice. and anyway like I said the extreme tacky adhesion should go down with repeated use. I like to have the PVA glue all over the plate and then desolve it with hot water to evenly spread it on the plate and almost clean it all off but intentionally leave a thinned down residue of glue over the whole plate surface and then print on that so that it releases easier and it does not leave much of an imprint from the glue spread around. you might try that too.

you were spot on. I have been Investing in glue and unsurprisingly I no longer have over adhesion. I’ll be sure to wash and apply between prints. looking forward to a seasoned build plate!

it has begun! printing in Bambu PLA Basic, seems to be holding up well. Feels really sturdy for so lightweight print. But what to do with the ‘extra beams’ I have over? haha must’ve missed something 😅 👏 Great Job in the models and thank you! 🙏

that is the Side-By-Side rail it joins stacked columns of racks to each other side by side. I highly recommend doing side by side configurations as wide and tall as you want. but if for some reason you are really only doing a single stacked column then you don't need this part and you can simply un-select it from the list of items to be printed on your plate.

do you think this would print well in generic petg from the handy app? Or would you recommend slicing it on the computer and not using generic petg

I think that some generic prand PETG works better.

I have attached a screenshot of the second layer of the base piece. The slicer separates the gap infill from the top surface unlike the shelf. It also doesn't have the "first two layers" modifier to make the lines have that fat 1mm width. I added in a modifier that gives the second layer a 1mm width just like the rack, but I haven't been able to merge the gap infill and the top surface. Is it down to the .stl design and how the slicer determines which is which? Just a little tiny detail. I don't really think it impacts anything legitimately its just so satisfying seeing those long diagonal lines.

I double checked both the .3mf files for this base model and they both have it. but in your screen shot you do not have it so you must have an old version of this .3mf or maybe it got deleted some how. you just need to download the .3mf again and it will work. I also uploaded a Generic PETG ( BASE LEVEL) profile for you to try let me know if it works for you. thank you.

It looks like my problem was trying to import both the shelf and the base piece into the same .3mf file. Even with the most recent files, when I imported the base piece in it did the same thing. But if I open the base piece and shelf in two separate instances of Bambu Studio they slice correctly.
