If you enjoy this model, your support is much appreciated!

Create your own cylindrical container! I have wanted to try out openscad and put some of my coding skills to use, this seemed like a good project to start with. These containers have a lot of utility, toothbrush holder, pencil holder, candy jar, pet treat jar, hardware containers, and more!

There are 22 different settings that you can adjust, which means most containers that are created will be one of a kind! Choose your size, lid type, and patterns. Each has settings that let you customize just about every detail of the container. Enjoy!

Click the customize button above or Click Here to get started.

Special Notes

Large Containers

For large containers with lids or for multi color printing, you may need to split the container and lid. This can be done in 2 ways.

  1. Create the container and lid with your customized settings. Once you are happy with the settings, change Models To Create to container, generate, and download. Then change Models To Create to lid, generate, and download.
  2. Create the container and lid with your customized settings, generate and download. In the slicer, split the model by selecting the split tool, rotate the splitting plane so that the container and lid are on either side of the plane, and perform cut. Add a new plate and drag the lid to the new plate.

Lid Tolerance

I tried to make the lids have the right fit, but not all filaments will print the same. If you find that the lid is too tight, increase the lid tolerance to add a larger offset to the size of the lid. Lids are generally smaller and use less filament, so I would suggest reprinting the lid with the updated settings instead of the whole container.

Printer Limitations

Depending on the printer, you can set the diameter and height to the size of the print bed. You probably want to leave a little bit of margin. I have put a max diameter and height on those settings of 240mm.

  • A1 Mini (Recommended max) - 170mm Diameter x 170mm Height.
  • All others (Recommended max) - 240mm Diameter x 240mm Height.

Before Printing

Please examine the model in the creation tool prior to downloading and printing. Extreme settings such as max twist with certain patterns can create holes in the container.

Settings

The tool includes descriptions for each of the settings. If you are unsure of what a setting does, the best way to tell is to make a change to a setting and generate to see how the model changes.

Main Settings

Models To Create

  • Container + Lid - Generate both a container and a lid.
  • Container - Generate just a container.
    • Useful for splitting the container and lid for printing in different colors. Just don't change any settings.
  • Lid - Generate just a lid.
    • Don't change other settings when switching from container to lid as lid types can change the container geometry.

Lid Type

  • Flush - Lid that sits inside the container and is flush with the top of the container. Includes a grip on top for easy removal.

  • Press-Fit - Lid that presses into the container and is visible above the container.
    • + Pattern - Adds the pattern applied to the container.
    • + Chamfer - Adds a chamfer to the top edge.

  • Screw - Lid that screws into the container and is visible above the container.
    • + Pattern - Adds the pattern applied to the container.
    • + Chamfer - Adds a chamfer to the top edge.

A. Container Diameter - The diameter of the container.

B. Container Height - The height of the container.

C. Wall Thickness - The thickness of the container walls.

Lid Settings

Lid Tolerance - The offset between the container diameter and the lid diameter. I've found the default (0.1) works well.

Lid Height - The height of the lid. This is the visible part of the lid for Press-Fit and Screw or the height of the lid that is inset for Flush lids.

Lid Offset - An offset applied to the lid diameter. Only applies to Press-Fit and Screw lids.

Lid Grip Size - The size of the grip for Flush lids.

Lid Grip Width - The width of the grip for Flush lids.

Lid Extent - The amount of the lid that extends into the container for Press-Fit and Screw lids.

Lid Remove Excess - Removes the inner area of the lid extent. Only applies to Press-Fit and Screw lids. Can be used to reduce filament used.

Lid Thread Pitch - Length between threads. Only applies to Screw lids.

Texture Settings

Pattern - The pattern to apply to the container and/or lid. There are 18 patterns to choose from and can be further customized.

Pattern Depth - How much depth to apply to the pattern.

Pattern Size X - Target size for the texture on the x-axis.

Pattern Size Y - Target size for the texture on the y-axis.

Pattern Twist - Add a twist to the pattern in degrees.

Add Pattern Border - Add a border region to some of the textures. Only applies to checkers, cones, hex_grid, and trunc_diamonds.

Pattern Border - The amount of border to add to the pattern.

Pattern Padding Bottom - Add a section with no pattern to the bottom of the container.

Pattern Padding Top - Add a section with no pattern to the top of the container.

Pattern Padding Offset - Increase the diameter of the padding on the container to match the pattern extent. This helps to give the container a more flush look and prevent overhangs.

Well deserved. If you can add adjustment for how wide thread is in screw lid version (or make it wider), that would be nice. Currently is pretty narrow and seam is affecting on threads quite a bit

I added a lid thread pitch setting. It will adjust the length between threads, but it also affects the extent of the threads in xy plane. I did some test prints with the max pitch and they work fine. Lid tolerance will also affect the diameter used for the lid threads. A larger tolerance will increase the spacing between the lid and container threads, but if the tolerance is too large the threads won't catch.

Thank you! How can I add text? For instance; shampoo, conditioner, soap...

The openscad code would need to be updated or you can try adding text in the slicer. You can then paint it a different color if you want, but it'll add filament swaps. I wouldn't do a large thickness otherwise it will create overhangs which need supports.

Thank you. I'd like the text to be below the surface. How can I do that? What settings do I need to change?

It doesn't seem like the slicer can embed even though there is an embedded depth setting. I'll take a look at adding text in the openscad code.

How can I calculate the inside height? Thanks.

The bottom is 2mm, so subtract 2 from the container height. Overall height is container height + lid height

It turned out great. You can barely see the line where the cap meets the body. I'm a KISS kind of guy so I did a very plain simple print for my Q-Tips. Going to do another but a bit shorter. Thanks again.

Hello, Would be possible a taller lid? I was thinking to divide a 210mm high cilinder in two, half lid and half body. I think it would be easier to print. double boost. Thanks.
