Description

Boost Me (for free)

if you want to see more mods and extensions to this model then feel free to boost me and I'll bring more here.

I mainly use my X1C to make jigs, templates, clamps, replacement spare parts etc for my workshop. A while ago I needed some storage boxes (cassettes) and thought about something with a cleat on the back that i could hang on a wall. I'm into sci-fi and cassettefuturism looks so i thought about the storage boxes that are often shown circling round corridors on spacecraft.  I wanted something that could hold larger things but still could be printed on an X1C.  During making this I made a ton of 50% size prototypes…which looked kinda cute and would be practical for storing all the small stuff on my tables and desks. So I decided to work further on these 50% size boxes, and I needed a system to hold a lot of them.

And then I thought “well how about a tower?”  So I designed a rotating cleated tower system that allows the boxes to be stored in a circular manner and then modularly stacked to make larger towers.. It started to look like a silo hence Silo Storage. The supporting tower has bearings in it so it rotates freely even with many pounds of total material in the whole silo.

It's a Beta so the design will get modified over time. I have some stuff developed that i haven't added such as interior compartments, cassettes that have drawers, cleats for walls.  The main box is also parameterized so I'll be producing taller, and wider boxes over time if there is an interest.

Have fun with your build, feedback is cool but be aware that this is a hobby for me not my job and I primarily built them for me rather than as a community model or modular system.  Also I have only been at printing for 18 months so i am sure there are way better ways that you folks can print these.

i really like the concept. There are a couple suggestions I would make if your interested, but overall that's a great design. Definitely aesthetical pleasing and functional. Thank you so much for sharing it.

how easy is it to access the lower bins? how do they attach, donthe clip down or slide in?

All the cassettes are lifted up and out, and pushed in and down. The lower tiers of cassettes do need to be removed from the soli to access. The top tier is for more rapid access and can be opened on the silo.

cool. Thank you!

I'm not very good at the designing part, but have you thought about trying to make these compatible with empty filament spools as well? Would be a cool way to reuse them.

hmm that’s a clever suggestion. I’ll for sure think about it.

I feel like this should incorporate using spools from old filament.

This looks fun - very creative! Now, am I going to be able to talk to my AI, and have it rotate the column and open the right container as I walk up to it? ;-) "Hey ChatGPT, I need a spanner thingie..."

one thing that is fun is if you make a minor adjustment to the the shafted piece then a rotation one way with any container will counter rotate all odd layers and rotate all even layers. Setting it like this would mean that if I stacked a single column sector (on all column layers) with for instance batteries, then rotating a single container to me would automatically rotate all other battery containers to me also. I thought of setting it like that but opted eventually not to.

I am a sucker for unique designs for storage compartments. This one, I really fancy. Can't wait to try and print this.
