Description

Shadow, a character from Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise, created by Naoto Ohshima and Yuji Naka.

Shadow is a black hedgehog created by Professor Gerald Robotnik, the grandfather of Doctor Eggman. Shadow shares design traits and attributes with Sonic the Hedgehog. He is an antihero who has good intentions but will do whatever it takes to accomplish his goals, putting him at odds with Sonic.

No supports are required.   One piece contains built-in supports/braces.  Optional part without the built-in supports/braces is also supplied if you want to use your slicer supports (see notes below).

If you have the proper filament colors, no painting is needed.

The assembled model is 155mm tall and is in proportion to my other characters from the Sonic series.

Note: This is my 'classic' version of Shadow.  I'm aware that he does not exist in the classics, but to make him fit with the rest of my other Sonic models I chose this approach.

Enjoy!

**Printing and assembly tips**

Printing tips
1 - No supports are required.   One piece contains built-in supports/braces, head_black.  An optional part without the built-in supports/braces is also supplied if you want to use your slicer supports.  The built-in supports/braces are designed for a .4mm nozzle and slicing at .2mm for the size that the model is presented.  Use your discretion for which parts to use if you resize the model significantly or slice at a different layer height.

2 - There are some pieces that may need brims or rafts, use your discretion.  When setting up my prints I prefer to be conservative to ensure the least chance of a print failure, especially since the base of many parts are hidden when inserted into another part.

*I used brims on:
- nose
- body_black
- hand_left
- hand_right

3 - The nozzle pieces print and assemble without issue, but you may prefer to print them at a lower layer height.

4 - Based on feedback from previous models, I made the arms and legs a bit thicker than Sonic for strength.

5 - When removing parts from the printer bed, it's a **VERY** good idea to place left/right parts into separate containers to help with the assembly process.  Sometimes the difference between the left and right parts is very small but it is still worth keeping track of them and assembling them in their proper place.

..

Assembly tips:

1 - Take your time gluing the model together and enjoy the process.  Give some thought into which parts to glue together as groups and then gluing the groups together.  Let the glue for each group set completely before combining groups.

2 - I used 3D Gloop (strong fast drying) and E6000 (tacky slow drying) glues to put this model together.  For both glues using a smaller amount is usually better than more glue.

3 - **important** Be sure to dry fit all parts before gluing.  The left/right gold parts look quite similar but functionally are very different.

4 - The mouth/eye_white/head_reds parts should all be glued to head_black at the same time.  Test fit to be sure all parts fit correctly.  The eye_red parts do stand out a bit from the head.

5 - Refer to the assembly diagrams in the pictures section as well as the uploaded pictures for putting the model together. The model is meant to be glued.

Do not hesitate to ask questions, feedback is essential to making better models.

I feel the part nozzles on the shoes could be a lil bit bigger

Yeah, those nozzles are small but I wanted to keep the shoes looking nice and that is the nozzle size that fit. Thank you for taking the time to post your make. Teamwork, Steve

Printed on a Creality K2 Plus. The only issue I had was with printing the head part it kept on failing in the default position so I rotated it 90 degrees so the "neck" was facing down and it finally was able to print. Filament used: Black - Polymaker Panchroma Matte PLA | Charcoal Black White - Overture PLA Pro Red - Polymaker Panchroma Satin PLA+ Green - Polymaker Polylite Translucent PETG Gold - Polymaker Panchroma Silk PLA Beige/Tan - Polymaker Panchroma Matte PLA | Army Beige

Looks great. Since you had issue printing on the Creality, it would be worthwhile understanding what went wrong. The built-in supports are designed for a .4mm nozzle and sliced at .2mm layers and only tested with PLA on a few different brands of machines. I have not heard of anyone having issues printing the head, so if you have the time, let me know what happened. Either way, thank you for taking the time to post your make. Teamwork, Steve

the main point of failure I had was on the lower spike on the head. I think I tried about a dozen times to print and usually everything on it turned out amazing but that spike was what kept on failing. It's weird too because it doesn't really make sense why that part is failing too no matter how much extra support I put on it and it didn't seem to matter if I used orca or creality print 6

From the picture, I cannot tell if the base came off the plate causing the issue, or if it messed up higher. I join all the little bases into one base on purpose, to ensure no individual base comes off the bed. If you want, send me a picture from your slicer, either here or a direct message. if it was not a base to plate failure. Teamwork, Steve

Absolute dream to print this! everything turned out perfect. I managed to print this at 140% sizing and at 0.12 Layer heights. I also added my own touch with Shadows famous glowing red eyes. 10/10

I battled myself trying to determine which eyes to put in him. At the posted size, to be compatible with the other characters of the series, there was not much leeway. Looks great. Teamwork, Steve

Loving this models ! Great Job ! I ended up by editing the eye to get that red to be perfect ! Btw I had also issues with printing the head like reported before, i did end up solving it by leaving top cover and door open (X1C user here, and normally i print PLA with all closed) , i guess for such overhangs it needs to have extra ventilation . The rest all perfect !

Not only does it look great but adding your X1C tips for cooling is quite important. The model is meant to be printed on any machine and specifically tested on two different Prusa's and one X1C but filament and everyone's cooling is slightly different. Every suggestion helps for those fringe cases. Teamwork, Steve

Right hand fails at layer 110 every time. Nozzle gets caught on infill and comes loose from plate. The rest of the prints work fine.

If you are having adhesion issues, just add a brim or raft to the part. Being knocked off like that is also attributed to filament not cooling fast enough due to the speed of some printers. You can verify this by printing another object away from this at the same time to give the layers more time to cool, but a brim should do the trick. Also, note that textured plates do not have the same adhesion for small parts as smooth plates. Lot's of little factors. Teamwork, Steve

Replying to @reddadsteve :
thanks, but it doesn't have to do with adhesion to the plate. like I had mentioned every other object has printed perfectly fine except for this single one. I have tried printing it by itself I've tried printing it with multiples to give time to cool, but there's something wrong with the gyroid infill that is getting it caught on the nozzle

I'm familiar with that part. Personally, I printed it with a brim (see my notes). Some parts are more susceptible to stresses. I used a Prusa but Gatekeeper used a Bambu to print that part. My QA guy, Benoit, also used a Prusa. So, we go through a lot of configurations when test printing. Differences in filament also play a role in parts like this. You can add a support in that area as well. I understand your frustration but with 3D printing, not everything is 100% equal and a helping hand with a brim/supports/glue is sometimes needed. Or in your case, the part is small enough to experiment and try a different infil. Teamwork, Steve

Hello, using the default settings, I've tried printing the head and it keeps failing, I've repeated it several times and it always fails there, have you changed its position or any settings? I can't get it to print without it failing

It does not look like you are using the presupported head STL , or the presupported head from the print profile. The unsupported head that uses slicer supports needs lot's of extra supports to keep the model in place (holding a part down is different than supporting a part), so there is really no reason to use that one unless you are resizing the model. Let me know how you make out. Teamwork, Steve
