Description

PLEASE CONFIRM YOU HAVE THE SAME SPOOL AS PICTURED IN THE PROFILE!

This is for the 2025 53mm spool. the old version has a smaller inner diameter!

Bought a Sunlu 250g filament variety box and the spools were too small to fit in my full size ams. I tried a few adapters made by others to fit my spool but they were wildly off in fitment. I made this model to snug fit the tiny spool and still utilize the ams system. The inner diameter is 52.5mm (+/- .1mm) and is designed to work with the 2025 Sunlu spools.

As of 1/20/25 Version 3 is up!

will this work with the Sunlu mini spools?

yes the outer diameter of the spool holding end is press fit on the new tiny spools' innter diameter 52.5mm! I am currently working on v3 to save on some filament and printing time and also add more places to attach filament ends. i should also note that this is designed to fit the full size ams.

Thank you - yes I have the full size AMS

Hey, thanks for designing this. It was a little too loose for the spool I tried - there wasn't enough friction to spin the small spool when the AMS spun the adapter trying to rewind. I think a small bump on the adapter to fit in the notch on one side of the spool might help to lock it in place without relying on friction. Can you add that for v3?

absolutely! did you print the v2 version? i had complaints that v1 was too tight and now v2 is loose! i think i might have to do exactly as you describe for a fix since i don't know if i can get the tolerances better than a half a mm. thank you for bringing this to my attention.

I printed the v2 in PLA+. Fit was good, there was slight friction, but it wasn’t a tight fit and didn’t take much effort to slide on.

Hehe, Sunlu have now reduced the spool content even more. There are now only 234g of filament on the ASA spools. Let's hope this adapter works anyway.

If you haven't printed it yet I uploaded a new print profile for version 2 which has better tolerances and faster print time!

I just finished printing and guess what? The inner diameter of the small spools are now just 42mm. Bleuh! But looking at the printout of the female part there are two cylinders there. It should be doable to keep the part with the male thread as it is and just change the female part, right?

oh no! i believe you have the old the spools produced in 2024, this design is meant to fit the ones with an inner diameter of 53mm. if you notice the spools in the pictures you provided are not the same as the ones pictured.

Hey made a remix of your design. my prints came out a little wonky so added some stopper on one side of the spool to keep it from coming out. Teamwork makes the dreamwork!

Is this supposed to be just friction fit? I printed it and the spool is super tight on it, so tight I can't slide it on all the way. I'm thinking with a little sanding I can get it to slide on. But also, looking at it, it is much wider than the spool so ultimately how does it hold the spool in place?

yes, I’m currently making version 2 that will be 1ish mm less diameter. for me I press fit it most of the way but not the whole way and screwed in the second half. if it does not press fit one way try turning the mini spool around and try the other side. it’s designed to work with the ams rollers so the whole unit spins with the ams rollers also I added some more pics of assembling it ect in a comment here.

I'd like to make a request for V4. I'm not the best at organizing things like this and I'll get lost in wondering "What type of spool is this spool holder meant to go with?" and "I really love this and want more, which print file is it?" Could you add to this somewhere that says "Sunlu Mini 250g Adapter for AMS" and "by CS Designs"? I know I could do that myself, but I can't be the only one that is a disaster at self organization.

something like this sounds great but there's a reason i did not implement it yet. some things i did not want to do were add printing time or mess with the balance of the spool itself. two quick solutions you could do are to rename the print profile that you have saved and sharpie the spool itself. In the bambu slicer itself if you click on the object, you can then click on a tool on the top called "text shape" and add in the words on the spool manually. going ahead i will likely add in the info into the shape of the outer ring itself but r&d takes time and i already have like 15 of these spools unused due to trail and error.
